Meet Dr. Emilie

Dr. Emilie Guinto Sumida is a board-certified pediatric dentist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.  She is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, a recognition given to those who have excelled in leadership, scholarly activity and community involvement.

Dr. Emilie Guinto Sumida received her Doctor of Dental Surgery from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, School of Dental Medicine. Upon graduation, she was commissioned as a Captain in the United States Army. Her first duty assignment was at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, where she completed a two-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry program.

After proudly serving in the military as a general dentist for six years, Dr. Emilie discovered her passion for providing dental care for children while working in underserved areas of Baltimore, Maryland. In 2015, she fulfilled her dream of becoming a pediatric dentist by completing a post-graduate program in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Maryland, School of Dental Medicine, where she served as chief resident.

Dr. Emilie has worked in community health clinics on Maui and was clinical staff for NYU Lagone Pediatric Dental Residency- Hawaii site. She has lectured at state and local organizations and agencies on promoting oral health awareness and disease prevention, specifically among young children and their mothers. She has also volunteered in numerous local outreach programs.

Her experience working with children has taught her that prevention and oral health education are vital for obtaining and maintaining a healthy smile. As a mother of three girls, Dr. Emilie is passionate about keeping every child’s dental visit educational, positive, and most importantly, fun.

Dr. Emilie considers herself blessed to be working with the team at Children’s Dentistry of Maui. She is thankful for her hard-working and dedicated staff, who always provide excellent care for patients and their families.  She looks forward to developing a relationship with each of you and takes great pride in continuing to serve the community with extraordinary dental care.
